I Don’t Like Music

Daily writing prompt
What would your life be like without music?

This is probably unheard of to most of you (if you are the same comment below), but I don’t like music.

I go through phases where all it does is irritate me. I hate when songs get stuck in my head, and the noise is sometimes overwhelming.

Some people, like myself, are highly sensitive to sensory stimuli, including sound. For us, music can be overwhelming, and even pleasant music might be too distracting or overstimulating.

I hated working in a retail environment where music was played 24/7. I especially hated it when it was Christmas music. It drove me absolutely crazy.

According to the internet, a person’s mood and emotional state can greatly influence their perception of music. If someone is feeling stressed, anxious, or irritable, they may find music exacerbates those feelings rather than providing comfort. Some individuals may have negative associations with music due to past experiences. If they’ve associated music with traumatic events or difficult periods in their lives, they might intentionally avoid it. I find this to be accurate.

So call me crazy for not liking music if you want to, but I’ll be sitting here with my noise cancelling headphones in silence.

This hasn’t always been the case for me by the way. In high school choir and piano were my favorite classes…I’m not sure what happened.

So, what do you think? Can you understand what I mean or do you think I’m crazy?

  1. You’re not crazy, I understand you.

  2. I don’t think you’re crazy but since you say that it hasn’t always been that way, you might have some issues from the past to deal with, especially if you participated in the choir on your own volution. I wonder why what you don’t like would stick to your mind?
