In a World of my Own

In my world, we would spend our days lying under the shade of the peach trees and swimming in the lake. We would bite into the fresh peaches and feel the juice run down our chins.

We’d eat fresh fruit and vegetables that we traded for with the sweater we knitted. And we knitted it because we enjoy knitting. And the man who traded the produce grew it because he loves to garden.

The sun would lighten our hair and tan our skin, and in the winter, we would bundle up and play in the snow.

There would be no “work.” Everyone would just do tasks that they enjoy, and we would all trade with each other and help each other out. Money wouldn’t exist. If there was a leaky roof, someone would fix it for a loaf of banana bread and some apples.

Doctors and nurses would still be doctors and nurses, but they learned from the town elders rather than taking out student loans to learn from a textbook. And they would be doctors and nurses because they love to take care of people. Everyone would trade for their services the same as they trade for other goods and services.

I think a lot about Walden by Henry David Thoreau and his simple life in the woods and how peaceful it would be to follow in his footsteps and leave modern society.
